Honouring a remarkable teacher, coach and mentor

Ross ‘Thappy’ Quick gave more than lessons, coaching and premierships to The Geelong College. He gave young people courage, discipline, encouragement and belief.

Now, through the Ross ‘Thappy’ Quick Scholarship, his legacy will continue to shape future generations of Geelong College students.

“Within this school at least, Ross Quick became almost a legend in his own lifetime.”

A life that changed lives

Francis Ross ‘Thappy’ Quick first arrived at The Geelong College as a student in 1925. Twenty-four years later, he returned as a teacher, beginning seventeen extraordinary years of service to the College community.

He taught English and Mathematics, served as Housemaster of Calvert House and coached cricket, tennis and football. Whatever the role, he brought originality, energy and an unwavering belief in young people.

As coach of the First XVIII from 1958 to 1963, Thappy guided the College to three APS Grand Finals, culminating in the historic 1963 APS Premiership.

Yet those who played under him remember him for far more than football.

He challenged young people to become better teammates, better leaders and better people.

“He not only taught us football, but made us realise the incalculable value of teamwork, the virtues of sportsmanship and that discipline... were essential in a successful team.”

Continuing Thappy’s legacy

On 31 July 1965, Ross ‘Thappy’ Quick died suddenly. The following week, hundreds gathered to farewell him as College boys formed a guard of honour stretching the length of Talbot Street.

More than sixty years later, his influence continues.

In 2024, members of the 1963 APS Premiership team approached The Geelong College with a vision to honour the coach who had shaped their lives. Their generosity funded the Ross ‘Thappy’ Quick Trophy Cabinet in Belerren, ensuring every student entering the Sports and Wellbeing Centre learns about Thappy’s remarkable contribution to College football.

But they believed his story should continue.

Together with the College, they established the Ross ‘Thappy’ Quick Scholarship, an endowed fund that reflects the values Thappy lived every day: courage, teamwork, humility, discipline, encouragement and service.
